Chrismukkah

What do you get when you combine Christmas, and Hanukah?
Chrismukkah!
But seriously, are we stepping onto the Tolerance Train or have we completely lost any and all reverence for each others holidays?
What is with the trend to smush all of the holidays into one? We can't actually smush the holidays into one holiday, so why smush the words?
Unless...
unless we aren't thinking about the meanings of the separate holidays anyway and therefore the words are...just words.
I just did a quick search and am a little startled to find that the Chrismukkah trend is quite real.
Here's a site for you to check out. http://www.chrismukkah.com/
Here's a quote from the Wikipedia entry on Chrismukkah
USA Today has described it as "[t]he newest faux holiday that companies are using to make a buck this season".
Hmm...I'm not sure what to think. My gut reaction though is that we're better off celebrating two distinct holidays.
Trying to combine them will only serve to water down both.
Do people who are Jewish really want to water-down the Miracle of Lights?
Do people who are Christian really want to water down the birth of Christ?

When both holidays mean nothing but an exchanging of gifts between families then it doesn't matter what you call it. I'd almost rather the non-religious celebrate "Chrismukkah" and leave Hanukkah and Christmas to those who celebrate it for the true meaning. Secular society has hijacked Christmas from Christians, going as far as making us feel bad for bringing up the true meaning, and has exploited Hanukkah to make a buck off of our Jewish brethren. Ask any practicing Jewish person, Hanukkah would not be half as big if it didn't have to compete with Christmas. Yom Kippur and Rosh Hoshanah are much more important holidays in the Jewish faith.
